When the Night Has Already Been So Long: A Service for the Longest Night

The Rev. Elsa Anders Cook

Advent feels as though it started in March when the first stay-at-home orders swept across the country because of the rampant spread of the coronavirus. We have been apart from each other for much of this year which has made 2020 feel like an especially long year.

Rooted in the ancient psalms of lamentation, this worship opportunity seeks to express what is so difficult to name for the grieving and hopeful. There has been so much loss. There is still so much that is unknown even as a new church year has dawned. Huddled around candles in our own homes, we are waiting for a new day to dawn.

This is an order of worship for online worship gatherings that is full of scripture, song and prayer for the longest of longest nights.
